August Healthcare at Wilmington was the second largest nursing home in New Hanover County in the first quarter of 2026, according to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS).

The center reported a capacity of 120 beds, which is 31 more than the county average for the period. It served an average of 87.4 residents during that time.

The overall rating for August Healthcare at Wilmington was 3 out of 5, as recorded by the CMS. This rating is slightly above the North Carolina average of 2.9 for nursing homes statewide.

Northchase Nursing and Rehabilitation Center held the top spot as the county’s largest nursing home, with 140 beds. Davis Health Care Center was ranked third, offering 115 beds for residents.

CMS data from the first quarter of 2026 shows August Healthcare at Wilmington incurred one fine totaling $27,378 and was subject to one penalty.

New Hanover County, North Carolina, had a total of eight for-profit nursing home facilities during the quarter.

Latest U.S. Census Bureau figures show the nation’s older adult demographic continues to expand as the number of younger Americans shrinks. Between 2020 and 2024, the population age 65 and over grew by 13%, while those under 18 declined by 1.7%. Over the past century, the older adult population has increased significantly, rising from 4.9 million in 1920 to over 61 million by 2024.

A 2021 report estimates that close to half of Americans in this age group—about 28 million people—are likely to need long-term services and supports. The same study projects that more than one-third may ultimately require nursing home care.

“Living a long life is something that many of us want and could get,” said Jesse Slome, executive director of the American Association for Long-Term Care Insurance. “But when we live a long life, the chances of us needing long-term care increase exponentially. But when you need that type of care, there are limited options.”
