Autumn Care of Shallotte was recognized as the second largest nursing home in Brunswick County during the first quarter of 2026, tied in size with one other facility, according to data from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). It shared this position with Brunswick Health & Rehab Center.

The center operated 100 available beds—13 fewer than Brunswick County’s average for the same quarter—and cared for an average of 93.7 residents throughout that time.

CMS awarded Autumn Care of Shallotte an overall rating of 3 out of 5, placing it above the North Carolina average of 2.9 for nursing homes statewide.

Brunswick Cove Nursing Center held the top spot as the largest facility in the county, offering 175 beds as of the first quarter.

By the start of 2026’s first quarter, Autumn Care of Shallotte had incurred three fines totaling $51,348 and received three penalties overall.

There were five for-profit nursing homes operating within Brunswick County during this period.

U.S. Census Bureau estimates indicate that the older adult population in the United States continues to grow while younger age groups decrease. Between 2020 and 2024, Americans age 65 and older increased by 13%, but the population younger than 18 declined by 1.7%. Over the past 100 years, the nation’s older adult demographic surged from 4.9 million in 1920 to more than 61 million in 2024.

Findings from a 2021 study estimate that nearly half of this age bracket—approximately 28 million people—may require long-term services and supports at some stage, and that more than one-third could need nursing home care in the future.

“Living a long life is something that many of us want and could get,” said Jesse Slome, executive director of the American Association for Long-Term Care Insurance. “But when we live a long life, the chances of us needing long-term care increase exponentially. But when you need that type of care, there are limited options.”
