Brunswick County Public Utilities announced on May 6 that it will conduct smoke testing of the sanitary sewer collections system along West Moore Street in Southport, between North Caswell Avenue and North Lord Street. The testing is scheduled for Friday, May 8, from 8:00 AM to 2:00 PM.
The county said residents may see smoke coming from the ground, manholes, sewer piping, roof vents, or gutters during this period. Officials advised homeowners to run water in sinks and showers or tubs before the test to fill P-traps with water. This step helps prevent smoke from entering homes through drains.
Smoke testing is a routine procedure used by public utilities departments to identify leaks or defects in the sanitary sewer system. The county provided a frequently asked questions page for more information about the process and what residents can expect during testing.
For additional questions or concerns regarding the upcoming smoke test, Brunswick County encourages residents to contact its Utilities Department at (910) 253-2657 for assistance.
Recent educational data shows that of senior students taking various portions of the ACT exam in Brunswick County school districts during the 2022-23 school year, college readiness rates ranged from approximately 17.9% in math to as high as 30.4% in reading; similar trends were observed among junior students according to the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction.
