Brunswick County Public Utilities announced on May 8 that residents on Silky Oak Drive in Bolivia, specifically at addresses 510 to 530, are experiencing low water pressure and outages due to a water main break.

The advisory matters because periods of low or no pressure in the distribution system can increase the risk of back-siphonage and allow bacteria to enter the water supply. Until further notice, Brunswick County Public Utilities and the North Carolina Division of Water Resources advise all affected consumers to boil their water for at least one minute before use or rely on bottled water for drinking, making ice, brushing teeth, washing dishes, and food preparation.

Approximately six residential connections have been impacted by this advisory. Customers will be notified through door hangers and Ready Brunswick alerts. The county said this measure is necessary to protect public health until tests confirm that the water is safe again.

“This advisory will remain in effect until further written notification is issued. Brunswick County will provide additional information when this advisory is lifted,” according to Brunswick County Public Utilities.

Residents with questions are encouraged to contact customer service Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 4:30 pm at (910) 253-2657 or after hours at (910) 755-7921, (910) 371-3490, or (910) 454-0512.

Broader educational data shows that college readiness rates among students in Brunswick County vary by subject area; less than one-third of juniors and seniors met college readiness benchmarks in reading, science, and math during the most recent school year according to the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction.
