Brunswick County has announced a scheduled water outage for customers on the south side of Main Street in Shallotte due to maintenance work. The service interruption will begin at 10:00 pm on January 8, 2026, and is expected to last until before 2:00 am on January 9, 2026. The affected area includes addresses from 4717 through 4807 Main Street.

Customers are advised to store water in containers ahead of the outage as water service will be unavailable during this period. Multiple fire hydrants in the area will also be out of service while maintenance is underway.

Once service resumes, Brunswick County Public Utilities and the NC Division of Water Resources recommend that residents boil all water or use bottled water for any human consumption purposes until further notice. This includes activities such as drinking, making ice, brushing teeth, washing dishes, and food preparation. “Vigorous boiling for one (1) minute should kill any disease-causing organisms that may be present in the water,” according to the advisory.

Twelve commercial connections are impacted by this outage. Notifications will be provided to customers via door hangers and ReadyBrunswick. Additional information will be shared when the advisory is lifted.

For questions during regular business hours (Monday through Friday, 8:00 am to 4:30 pm), customers can call (910) 253-2657. For after-hours or holidays, they can reach (910) 755-7921, (910) 371-3490, or (910) 454-0512.

“This advisory remains in effect until further notification is issued,” stated Adam Sellers from Brunswick County Public Utilities.

In other matters related to Brunswick County schools, recent data shows that a significant portion of students were not considered ready for college based on their ACT scores during the 2022-23 school year. For example, only about 22.9% of senior students who took the science portion met college readiness standards according to https://www.dpi.nc.gov/. Similarly low percentages were seen in reading and math among both seniors and juniors taking these tests.
