Karl Ricanek Jr. has been inducted into the Graduate College Hall of Fame at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University, according to an April 9 announcement from the university.

The induction recognizes Ricanek’s distinguished career and contributions in artificial intelligence, machine learning, and computer vision. The honor highlights his leadership in research and innovation within these fields.

Ricanek is a professor in the Department of Computer Science at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington (UNCW) and serves as director of the Institute for Interdisciplinary Identity Sciences (I³S). He holds bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees in electrical engineering from N.C. A&T, graduating summa cum laude and being a member of several academic honor societies. “It is humbling to be recognized by my alma mater,” said Ricanek. “As a student, I viewed the faculty as superheroes whose expertise and dedication inspired me. To be acknowledged in this way suggests that I may now stand a bit closer to the example they set.”

Ricanek is internationally recognized for his work on AI-driven facial analytics, biometrics, and health intelligence with multiple patents and over 90 peer-reviewed publications to his name. He co-founded Lapetus Solutions where he was CEO and chief AI scientist developing technologies for insurance and financial services industries. He is also a senior member of both the National Academy of Inventors and IEEE.

His career includes research fellowships with NASA, the Naval Undersea Warfare Center, and the National Security Agency as well as serving as founding co-director for an Office of Director of National Intelligence-designated Center of Academic Excellence in Science and Technology.

The university said that Ricanek’s induction celebrates not only his scholarly achievements but also his leadership role advancing artificial intelligence research.
