New Hanover County, NC – In response to increased fire risks, the N.C. Forest Service has announced a ban on all open burning across the state. This measure is effective from 8 a.m. on Friday, March 21, and will remain in place until further notice.

In alignment with this statewide directive, the New Hanover County Fire Marshal’s Office will enforce a local burn ban applicable to all areas within the county, including locations within 100 feet of occupied dwellings. This step aims to provide a comprehensive approach to reducing fire hazards during the current dry conditions.

The ban under North Carolina law prohibits all open burning across all 100 counties, regardless of previously issued permits. The issuance of new permits has also been halted until the restriction is lifted.

Residents seeking more information about the burn ban are advised to contact either the N.C. Forest Service county ranger or the New Hanover County Fire Marshal’s Office.
