New Hanover County is launching a new initiative to repurpose unwanted items, offering them to the public at no cost. The program, named Treasure Island, will begin operations on July 12 and will be located at the Recycling and Solid Waste headquarters in Wilmington, North Carolina.
Treasure Island aims to reduce landfill waste by redistributing usable materials. It will open its doors to the public every second Saturday of the month from 9 a.m. to noon. Residents can visit during these hours to select items on a first-come, first-served basis.
The materials available at Treasure Island are collected by staff from New Hanover County’s landfill customer convenience site and recycling facility. These items are tested for functionality before being made available to the public.
During its inaugural weekend, visitors can expect a variety of goods such as power tools, sports equipment, patio furniture, dishes, paint, wall art, books, TVs, household electronics, among others.
Joe Suleyman, Director of Recycling and Solid Waste stated: “Recycling is important to limiting what materials go into our landfill, but sometimes there are unwanted items that can still be of use but are difficult to recycle or have limited resale value.” He added that this program provides these items with “a second chance,” benefiting both the environment and community members who pick them up free of charge.
To claim an item from Treasure Island’s inventory, individuals must complete a waiver of liability. All items are distributed without reservations on a first-come basis.
