In New Hanover County, North Carolina, the Main Library in downtown Wilmington is preparing for its move to a new location within the Grace District. The library will close to the public after regular operating hours on Sunday, August 3. This closure will allow staff to transfer collections and equipment to the new facility on Grace Street, which is expected to open in early October.
Public Library Director Dana Conners stated, “While not seeing visitors for a few weeks will be difficult, the time will allow us to transition to our new building and be ready to welcome families and our community to their new library in downtown Wilmington.” Conners added that they are excited about the new space and look forward to opening it this fall.
During the closure of the Main Library’s interior, residents can return books using an exterior book drop. However, visiting another library branch is preferred. The other branches remain open with specific hours from Monday through Sunday at Northeast Library, Pine Valley Library, and Pleasure Island Library.
The Cape Fear Museum section of the complex in Grace District is not expected to open until summer 2026 as exhibit work continues.
