New Hanover County man arrested on child sex crime charges, held without bond

The New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office announced the arrest of 20-year-old Oscar Benedict-Romero on charges involving alleged sexual interactions with a child.

Benedict-Romero was arrested on May 24 and charged with indecent liberties with a child and statutory rape of a child under the age of 15, according to WWAY TV3. The report said he was being held without bond and was expected to make his first court appearance later that week.

The arrest followed an investigation by the New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office, according to WWAY. The report said Benedict-Romero was taken into custody after allegations involving sexual interactions with a child.

Rhine Law Firm reported that 110 of 292 registered sex offenders in New Hanover County lived within one mile of an elementary school, based on data available in the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation’s Sex Offender Registry and research conducted by the firm. The firm also said no school in New Hanover County was without a registered sex offender living within a one-mile radius.

The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation maintains the North Carolina Sex Offender Registry. The agency says the public may search the registry, view sex-offense statistics, and sign up for email alerts.

The New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office is based at 3950 Juvenile Center Road in Castle Hayne. The agency provides sheriff’s office services, detention resources, crime-tip submission, community programs, and access to sex-offender registry resources.
