New Hanover County is preparing to finalize the purchase of a 60-acre property known as the Bryan Tract on Independence Boulevard. Located in Wilmington, it is among the city’s largest undeveloped areas. The aim is to preserve it as community greenspace. The purchase agreement is set to be considered by the Board of Commissioners on May 5.
The county will purchase the land for $11.6 million. However, since it already holds a two-thirds ownership share, the actual financial responsibility will be $3.86 million. This sum will be financed via the county’s Revenue Stabilization Fund and repaid over ten years without affecting property taxes.
Preserving greenspace was identified as a priority in this year’s budget process by the commissioners. Acquiring the Bryan Tract supports this aim and aligns with the county’s Strategic Plan that focuses on sustainable land use and environmental stewardship.
The acquisition fulfills the wishes of Flossie Bryan, a longtime resident, who stipulated in her will over twenty years ago that the property should serve the public’s benefit.
“This is a meaningful step for our county,” Board Chair Bill Rivenbark remarked. “We’re preserving a special place for our community today and for the generations that will follow.”
Future plans involve a long-term effort to determine how best the land will be used for public benefit. Input from the community will be integral to ensure the land’s natural character is honored and serves community needs.
