The facility provided 140 beds, which was 51 beds more than the New Hanover County average for the first quarter of 2026. On average, 124 residents received care at Northchase during this period.

The CMS gave Northchase Nursing and Rehabilitation Center an overall rating of 2 out of 5, compared to the state average of 2.9 for nursing homes in North Carolina.

Estimates from the U.S. Census Bureau indicate the older adult demographic nationally has increased, while the number in younger groups has declined. Between 2020 and 2024, Americans aged 65 and older grew by 13%, as compared to a 1.7% decrease in those under 18. The nation’s older population has expanded considerably over the past 100 years, rising from 4.9 million in 1920 to over 61 million by 2024.

A 2021 analysis found that nearly half of adults in this age group—about 28 million people—could require some form of long-term services and supports, and more than one-third may ultimately reside in a nursing home.

“Living a long life is something that many of us want and could get,” said Jesse Slome, executive director of the American Association for Long-Term Care Insurance, an insurance-focused education organization. “But when we live a long life, the chances of us needing long-term care increase exponentially. But when you need that type of care, there are limited options.”
