The construction of the new downtown Public Library and Cape Fear Museum is progressing on schedule, with the opening of the library anticipated in October 2025. The Cape Fear Museum is set to install new exhibits subsequently, aiming for a May 2026 opening. This phased approach ensures both facilities are prepared to welcome visitors, with the area to be known as “The Grace District,” serving as a hub for education, culture, and community engagement.
The current downtown Public Library plans to close in August 2025 for relocation of collections and technology, reopening in the new facility in October 2025. Meanwhile, the Cape Fear Museum will temporarily close from November 30, 2025, through May 2026 for the safe relocation of over 400 artifacts. During this period, museum staff will conduct community outreach by bringing educational programming to schools, libraries, and community centers. The existing museum site and park on Market Street will continue to operate as a research, exhibition design, and collections management facility.
Community support for the project is highlighted by the Cape Fear Museum Associates’ “Invest in Grace” campaign. Local company nCino has committed $160,000 over four years to sponsor the museum’s planetarium, and Novant Health plans to commit $200,000 to sponsor the Science Matters exhibit, pending approval by the Board of Commissioners on May 5. The Library Foundation and Friends of the Library are also working to fund enhancements to specialized spaces and technology in the new library.
The county manages Project Grace within its $77 million budget, leveraging both public investments and private community support to efficiently complete construction and prepare engaging spaces for residents and visitors.
Further updates will be shared as the Library and Museum continue to develop, and The Grace District takes shape.
