CITY OF WILMINGTON: Council meeting, Jan. 21

Meeting 10

City of Wilmington issued the following announcement on Jan. 17.

The Wilmington City Council will meet on Tuesday, January 21, at 6:30 p.m. at City Hall. Items of interest include:

Award of a pair of transportation bond engineering contracts to John Davenport Engineering, Inc.:

The Pine Grove Drive at Oleander Drive and MacMillan Avenue Intersection Improvements Project. This $494,868 design contract, if approved, will provide design services on this voter-approved transportation bond project, which is slated to include an intersection realignment, new traffic signal, turn lane additions, and pedestrian improvements such as sidewalks, crosswalks and signals.

The Pine Grove Drive at Greenville Loop Road and Holly Tree Road Intersection Improvements Project. This $464,275 design contract, if approved, will provide design services on this voter-approved transportation bond project, which is slated to include a dual lane roundabout, intersection improvements, a new southbound travel lane, turn lane additions, and pedestrian improvements such as sidewalks, crosswalks, and signals.

An ordinance appropriating $1.8 million in federal HUD funds that will allow the city to provide grants to eligible homeowners and landlords to remediate lead-based paint hazards. Funds must be used to provide assistance for pre-1978, privately-owned housing that is rented or owned by low income families, and are occupied or includes a significant amount of time spent by a child under the age of 6. Additionally, the funds would be used for outreach and education on lead-based paint hazards and to identify eligible households to receive assistance.

An ordinance appropriating $1,967,511 from the Convention Center Budget for repairs and updates to the Wilmington Convention Center. The repairs are associated with damage from Hurricane Florence and improvements to help prevent future storm damage, and general maintenance needs for the 10-year-old facility. Work will be funded by the Convention Center Budget and some FEMA reimbursement funds, not city funds.

A contract amendment to extend Lanier Parking’s management of the Park Wilmington Program for three years.

Three items pertaining to the initiative to advocate for re-aligning railroad tracks from city streets to across the Cape Fear River, freeing up the old tracks for alternative transportation uses such as a mass transit system or a greenway for pedestrians and bicyclists:

A resolution authorizing the city to enter into an official agreement with the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) for administration of the $2 million grant recently awarded to the city for the Rail Realignment Project;

A resolution authorizing the city to enter into an official agreement with the NC Department of Transportation (NCDOT) for administration of the $500,000 in matching funds for the FRA grant;

An Ordinance appropriating the full $2,500,000 from both grants.

A concurrent resolution of both the Wilmington City Council and the New Hanover County Board of Commissioners to evaluate and potentially restructure WAVE Transit and the governing Cape Fear Public Transportation Authority.

A resolution appointing Donny Williams as interim Police Chief of the Wilmington Police Department.
