Nonprofit Matthew's Ministry is now calling the old Oak Island Town Hall home and is helping distribute food to those in need in the community.
For more 10 years, the ministry's mission has been to provide food for the children of Brunswick County through Friday backpacks to help get them through the weekends. Now during the COVID-19 pandemic, the nonprofit has been partnering with local churches for food distribution sites.
Director of Matthew's Ministry Kristie Disbrow told WECT that around 27% of Brunswick County children are from food-insecure homes.
Disbrow quoted a saying to WECT that she says keeps her motivated.
“There’s a saying I heard or read somewhere that we’re all facing this crisis in different kinds of boats. There are people in battleships that barely notice, and there are kayaks that are in danger of toppling over in the waves," Disbrow told WECT. “We’re here to help those in the kayaks.”
The nonprofit gets food from local foodbanks, individual donations and collection sites in the community such as Southport Rotary.
