Wilmington, NC Fire Department issued the following announcement on July 26.
MYTH: You should stop, drop, & roll when your house is on fire.
REALITY: You only stop, drop, & roll when your clothes are on fire.
Y'all... we know this one sounds crazy. But here's the thing -
You may or may not be surprised to hear that most of the time when we ask when you should Stop, Drop, & Roll, the most common response we get is "when your house is on fire!"
Let's think that through real quick... if your house is on fire , we do NOT want you rolling around on the floor. That's only if your clothes are on fire . The rolling puts the fire on your clothes out. It will not put the fire at your home out.
Instead, if your house is on fire, Get Low and Go .
We get low because there is less smoke & more good air down by the floor since smoke & heat rise.
Then we go outside to our meeting place to wait for the firefighters .
Aaaannnd... now you know.
What’s another Firefighter myth you want us to investigate?
