University of North Carolina Wilmington issued the following announcement on Aug. 2.
More than 90 participants will join UNCW's 2021 New Faculty Orientation held August 3-5. Sponsored by the Office of Academic Affairs and hosted by the Center for Teaching Excellence and Center for Faculty Leadership, the program is designed to introduce new and reassigned faculty to important aspects of life as a faculty member at UNCW.
“Our usual new faculty orientation experience has been thoroughly reinvented again this year, from the dual modes of delivery to the order and type of sessions,” said Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs James J. Winebrake. “This new hybrid model provides for in-person and virtual experiences to support our new hires as well as some faculty members transitioning to new positions.”
More than 100 current faculty and staff volunteers representing more than 40 departments across campus will participate in the programming. The sessions will convey critical information about working at UNCW such as teaching and research expectations, Title IX compliance, benefits and retirement information, and shared governance on campus.
Tuesday’s sessions will dive deep into topics such as fostering an inclusive community, inspiring students through high impact teaching practices and connecting with community partners to understand Wilmington’s complex history through the 1898 Initiative. The day will conclude with a welcome reception hosted by Chancellor Sartarelli.
On Wednesday, in-person participants will spend the day touring the campus and Wilmington area by charter bus and riverboat cruise. During their travels, they will learn more about UNCW’s history; the role of the Center for Marine Science in the university and region; and UNCW’s community engagement efforts through various programs like the D.C. Virgo Preparatory Academy and the Watson College of Education.
Thursday’s agenda highlights include a presentation by current faculty who have spent more than 30 years at UNCW and a session on how to incorporate information literacy practices in the classroom. The orientation will conclude with the Engaged Teaching Institute, featuring current UNCW faculty and staff who will share what they do to engage their students every day.
New faculty members will also have access to the event’s Canvas site, which includes information from dozens of university offices, providing information, links, videos, and even coupons from the administrators and campus units that support new faculty success.
“We can’t wait to welcome our new faculty,” said Diana Ashe, director of the Center for Teaching Excellence and the Center for Faculty Leadership. “We are committed to supporting each of them during their transition and throughout their time at UNCW. It is our hope that by providing this orientation, new faculty members will have the opportunity to meet other new colleagues and make connections that will enable them to thrive in their new roles.”
