New Hanover County reports more than 300 new COVID-19 cases over the past week

Coronavirus update920

New Hanover County issued the following announcement on July 29.

New Hanover County Health and Human Services’ Public Health reports a concerning resurgence in new reported cases of COVID-19 and an increase in the percent of tests that are positive for COVID-19. Over the past week, there have been 334 new cases of COVID-19 reported in the county, compared to 119 new reported cases at last release on July 22.

“We’ve seen our local percent positivity testing rate go from 1.7 percent at the end of June, to 5 percent at the end of July,” said Public Health Director David Howard. “Reported new cases over the past week have more than doubled over last week’s case count, which also showed increasing trends week over week. Our county metrics have taken a sharp turn in the wrong direction, and we need to prevent this from continuing. We strongly urge our unvaccinated residents to seek out a vaccine. We do not yet have enough people vaccinated to offer significant community protections from the spread of COVID-19 and severe illness. We cannot stress enough how important it is to protect yourself and others right now. If you have been waiting to get your vaccine, the time to get it is now to protect yourself and others from COVID-19.”

In today’s press conference, Governor Cooper announced Executive Order 224, in response to increasing COVID-19 metrics statewide. Effective September 1, the order requires state government cabinet agencies to verify if their employees are vaccinated and requires weekly COVID-19 testing and masks for all unvaccinated state employees. The order continues to strongly recommend that all K-12 schools require masks for students and staff, in alignment with CDC guidance, and that residents in counties with high rates of viral spread wear masks in public, indoor settings to slow the spread.
