University of North Carolina, Wilmington issued the following announcement on Sept. 16.
The university is deeply sorry to share the news that Joel J. Mintzes, who served UNCW for nearly 30 years as a professor of biology, passed away on September 13, 2021. Dr. Mintzes retired as a full professor, having advised and mentored many graduate students who went on to make contributions to the field of biology education.
“Joel was a mentor in the early years of my career and always happy to help out,” said department colleague and friend UNCW Professor Lawrence Cahoon. “He was very passionate about science education and the importance of it and dedicated his entire career to that effort.”
The Herbert and Shirley Mintzes Memorial Award was established by Dr. Joel J. Mintzes and is named in memory of his parents. The family has asked that in lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Joel be made to: The Herbert and Shirley Mintzes Memorial Scholarship Endowment at giving.uncw.edu/mintzes or checks can be made to UNCW, University Advancement, 601 South College Road, Wilmington, NC 28403 with a note indicating Mintzes Memorial Scholarship Endowment. Contributions may also be made to BNai Israel Congregation, 2601 Chestnut Street, Wilmington, NC 28405.
