Brunswick Community College issued the following announcement on Feb. 11.
Our celebration of Black History Month continues with Dr. Carter G. Woodson. Known as the "Father of Black History," Dr. Woodson educated America about the important ways that African Americans have helped shape our country. Born in New Canton, VA, he grew up to be an author and teacher.
He felt that African Americans should be proud of their heritage, and that everyone should learn about it. In 1926, Dr. Woodson established the second week of February as Negro History Week. It was expanded into what we now know as Black History Month.
