Wilmington City Council and the New Hanover County Commissioners held a joint meeting on Thursday, Feb. 24, with affordable housing being one of the major topics discussed.
Wilmington Mayor Bill Saffo issued the following statement about affordable housing at the conclusion of today's meeting:
“Over the past two decades, the City of Wilmington has committed $52 million to affordable housing with a proven strategy that balances affordable rental opportunities with making the dream of affordable home ownership a reality. Today, 713 families are homeowners and 1241 more affordable housing options exist because of the City of Wilmington’s significant ongoing commitment to affordable housing. With four programs, accelerated investments, private sector partnerships, and code revisions designed to increase affordable housing availability, the City of Wilmington continues to make steady progress in addressing the need for affordable housing.
In addition to the city’s continued annual investments, New Hanover County pledged $15 million over the next five years at today’s joint city-county meeting. The City of Wilmington welcomes our enhanced partnership in tackling the shared challenge of affordable housing. I look forward to growing our partnership on this important issue and working together to increase the availability of affordable housing in Wilmington and New Hanover County.”
