Dr. Heather Koopman, professor and chair in the UNCW Department of Biology and Marine Biology, has been named an America Council on Education Fellow.
Koopman is among 46 fellows selected for the 2022-23 cohort in the ACE Fellows Program, a 55-year-old national leadership development program that prepares faculty and staff for senior positions in college and university administration.
During the fellowship, Koopman will have the opportunity to work with senior administrators at UNCW and visit other campuses and higher education-related organizations to gain new knowledge and skills. The fellows will conduct projects of pressing concern for their home institutions and seek to implement their findings upon completion of the fellowship.
“I am really looking forward to meeting with leadership at other institutions to see how they have successfully enhanced diversity, equity and inclusion in STEM fields,” Dr. Koopman said.
Originally hailing from Ontario, Canada, Dr. Koopman joined UNCW in 2004, after earning a doctoral degree at Duke University and completing a postdoctoral fellowship at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. She is an animal physiologist who studies zooplankton, lobsters, basking sharks and whales, primarily in the Bay of Fundy. She and her students have published more than 50 papers in peer-reviewed journals. She has been department chair since 2017.
About 2,500 higher education leaders have participated in the ACE Fellows Program over the past five decades, with more than 80 percent of Fellows having gone on to serve as senior leaders of colleges and universities.
