Kathryn Schoepf, our 2023 NHCS Rookie Teacher of the Year, spent years working in college enrollment before realizing her real passion and calling was in teaching.
Now the coding teacher at Roland-Grise Middle, she has created an interactive and forward-thinking program where students work collaboratively and develop skills they can apply in the outside world.
Recently she taught them about Rear Admiral Grace Hopper, a pioneer in the field of coding, because it’s important to know the impact that your creative thinking and problem-solving can have in the world, she said.
For the last seven years the Wilmington Rotary Club has partnered with the district to sponsor the Rookie of the Year program, which recognizes teachers in their second or third year on the job and inspires them to continue their work in education. New Hanover County Schools also has a dedicated Beginning Teacher Support Program to support educators as they enter the field.
The other finalists for 2023 NHCS Rookie of the Year are:
- Brooke Cunningham, 1st grade Teacher at Murrayville Elementary
- Erin Dancy, PE Teacher at Holly Tree Elementary
- Rebecca Lloyd, EC Teacher at College Park Elementary
- Jessica Smith, 8th grade Science Teacher at Holly Shelter Middle School
Congratulations to all and thank you for your commitment to helping our students learn and grow.
