Arrest from DWI Checking Station
The New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office was assisting the Wilmington Police Department with a North Carolina Governors Highway Safety Program DWI checking station located at MLK Parkway and Kornegay Ave. One role at the checking station is to observe anyone trying to divert or avoid the checking station. Sheriff’s SAFE Deputies were assigned to that role last night. Deputies observed a vehicle approaching the checking station and pulling off the road to avoid the checking station. Deputies attempted to stop the vehicle as it turned down the embankment and traveled the wrong way down the off-ramp. Deputies pursued the vehicle down several streets ultimately performing a PIT maneuver and stopping the vehicle on Murrayville Rd. The driver of the vehicle, Christopher Taylor Craft, was arrested on 18 felony/misdemeanor charges including speeding to elude arrest, possession of methamphetamine and 4 outstanding warrants for arrest. Craft is in the New Hanover County Detention Facility under a $550,000 secure bond.###
