Washington, D.C. — Today, Senators Ted Budd (R-NC), Amy Klobuchar (D-MN), and Tina Smith (D-MN) introduced S. 3020, the Volunteer Driver Tax Appreciation Act. The bill aims to support volunteer drivers who provide rides for seniors and non-drivers through churches, community organizations, and nonprofits by increasing the charitable mileage tax deduction rate.

Under the current rate, volunteer drivers are eligible for a charitable mileage tax deduction of $0.14 per mile. However, with the introduction of the Volunteer Driver Tax Appreciation Act, this rate would be increased to $0.655 per mile. This adjustment would alleviate the financial burden on volunteer drivers and enable them to continue their vital work of providing access to healthcare, meals, and other essential services.

Senator Budd emphasized the importance of volunteer drivers in rural areas, stating, "Volunteer drivers provide critical services to predominantly rural areas of our country. Seniors, veterans, and disabled citizens are able to access food and healthcare through the charitable work of others. Increasing the charitable mileage reimbursement rate will make it easier for volunteer drivers to continue giving of themselves and helping more people. Thank you to Senator Klobuchar for leading this vital legislation."

Senator Klobuchar highlighted the significance of volunteer drivers in rural communities and their role in assisting seniors, people with disabilities, veterans, and others in accessing necessities like meals and healthcare. She explained that by increasing the charitable mileage tax deduction rate, the Volunteer Driver Tax Appreciation Act would alleviate the financial burden on volunteer drivers and ensure their continued service to their communities.

Echoing her colleagues' sentiments, Senator Smith emphasized the critical role of volunteer drivers in Minnesota communities. She acknowledged their contribution in providing access to food, medication, and transportation for seniors, veterans, and people with disabilities. Senator Smith expressed that the legislation's objective is to increase the charitable mileage tax reimbursement rate, thereby reducing the financial burden on these volunteers. By providing fair compensation for their services, the bill aims to support and enable volunteers to continue assisting those who rely on them.

The introduction of the Volunteer Driver Tax Appreciation Act demonstrates the recognition and appreciation for the invaluable service provided by volunteer drivers. If passed, this legislation would not only alleviate the financial burden on these individuals but also ensure the continuation of their selfless work in helping those in need.
