Moms for Liberty - New Hanover County has endorsed Natosha Tew in the race for a seat on the New Hanover County School (NHCS) Board. In-person early voting commenced on Feb. 15 for the March 5 primary election.
"New Hanover County Moms for Liberty proudly endorses Natosha Tew, a true grassroots conservative candidate that will remove the disastrous woke ideology out of our schools and bring back excellence in academics through merit-based grading," said Jan Boswell, Interim Chair. "Ms. Tew will fight to make our schools safer and to protect Parent's Rights against tyrannical government overreach. It is an honor to endorse Ms. Tew for the New Hanover County School Board."
Tew, who also has ten years of experience as a first responder, explains on her campaign website that she chose to homeschool her daughter due to dissatisfaction with the public school system. She believes this gives her further insight into what's wrong with New Hanover County Public Schools and motivates her to rectify what she perceives as a flawed system. As she elucidates, "The foundation of my candidacy is on fixing our schools by removing the politicized 'Woke' curriculum. I want to return our schools to using proven educational principles."
In a candidate questionnaire for Port City Daily, Tew expressed her ambition to fortify the board's slim majority in order "to fire the current superintendent, dismantle DEI, protect Parent’s Rights and give our children an America First education." She harbors particular concerns about Superintendent Dr. Charles Foust's leadership, citing his plan to terminate the Career Readiness Program at Moseley High School so that the facility could be repurposed into a center for illegal immigrants: "Foust and the other Wokesters want to shut down a program that serves primarily Hispanic students whose parents are taxpayers, so they can bring in non-citizens who will be an immediate burden on the community."
Tew underscored her commitment to keeping parents involved in their children's education in the questionnaire: "We all have to do better because letting the schools do everything has been a disaster. The schools should welcome getting rid of duties that are outside their ability and authority to provide, and should welcome engaged, passionate parents, who are the greatest untapped resource any school district has. Here’s a tip: Don’t trust anyone who says parents are the problem."
According to the NHCS Board of Education manual, the Board is composed of seven members. Terms last four years and are staggered so that three or four new members are elected every two years. Members are elected on a partisan basis.
Moms for Liberty is an advocacy group for parental rights in education, founded by Tiffany Justice and Tina Descovich, both former school board members. According to its website, Moms for Liberty is a 501(c)(4) nonprofit organization working to unite parents in the pursuit of liberty.
