Washington, D.C. — In a speech on the Senate floor today, Senator Ted Budd (R-NC) urged the chamber to pass the POLICE Act. The bill seeks to amend the Immigration and Nationality Act to explicitly state that an illegal immigrant may be deported for assaulting a police officer. Current law does not cover all assaults against law enforcement, allowing some immigrants to remain in the country even after committing such crimes.

Senator Chris Murphy (D-CT) objected to Senator Budd’s request for unanimous consent by calling the bill “nothing.”

Senator Budd responded by saying: “It’s disheartening to me to hear that a simple piece of legislation, the POLICE Act, which states that an illegal alien can be deported for assaulting a police officer, firefighter, or other first responder, is ‘nothing’. I don’t profess to understand that.”
