Senators Ted Budd and Thom Tillis, along with Representatives Virginia Foxx and Chuck Edwards, have called on President Biden to take immediate action in response to the housing crisis facing Western North Carolina. The lawmakers have requested that the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) deploy temporary housing resources such as travel trailers and manufactured homes to the region.

The appeal comes as temperatures drop, leaving many residents unable to return to their homes following the devastation caused by Hurricane Helene. The letter states, "this would give homeowners the ability to remain on their own property while repairs and reconstruction continue."

The legislators highlighted that FEMA regulations currently prevent deploying temporary housing in flood-prone areas. While intended for safety, these rules may hinder residents from staying close to family and maintaining their daily routines during recovery efforts.

In 2023, FEMA allowed temporary housing units in Florida's Special Flood Hazard Areas (SFHAs) under similar circumstances. The letter argues that a similar approach is necessary for Western North Carolina, where many affected homeowners reside in SFHAs. Reports indicate some residents are living in tents due to resource denial, which is unsustainable as winter approaches.

The letter concludes with an offer of cooperation: "We appreciate your swift consideration of this request and stand ready to work with you and your administration to get this authorization approved."
