Senator Ted Budd of North Carolina, alongside Senators Katie Britt and Majority Leader John Thune, urged the Senate to pass the Laken Riley Act during a press conference in Washington, D.C. The act aims to prevent crimes committed by illegal aliens.

Budd emphasized the importance of the bill, stating, "We can’t let something like this happen again… I can’t think of a single reason why any senator would oppose the Laken Riley Act."

The reintroduction of the bill was led by Senators Budd and Britt earlier this week. In the House, Representative Mike Collins is spearheading the legislation.

The proposed law mandates U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to arrest illegal aliens involved in theft-related offenses such as burglary, larceny, or shoplifting. It also requires these individuals to be detained until they are deported from the United States.

Additionally, state attorneys general would gain authority to sue the Secretary of Homeland Security if immigration actions negatively impact their states or citizens.

The act is named after Laken Riley, a University of Georgia nursing student who was murdered on campus last year by an illegal alien previously cited for theft and shoplifting but released.
