Senators Ted Budd and Thom Tillis, along with Representatives Chuck Edwards, Virginia Foxx, Pat Harrigan, Mark Harris, Richard Hudson, Brad Knott, Addison McDowell, Tim Moore, Greg Murphy, and David Rouzer have jointly addressed a letter to President Joe Biden and FEMA Administrator Deanne Criswell. The correspondence emphasizes the necessity of retaining disaster recovery resources in Western North Carolina.
The lawmakers express their apprehension that recent natural disasters in California might prompt FEMA to reallocate personnel from North Carolina. "We are writing to express our concern that in light of the latest natural disaster occurring in California," they state, adding that these individuals remain crucial for ongoing recovery efforts in the region.
The delegation acknowledges the importance of addressing emergencies elsewhere but insists on the continued support for North Carolina's needs. "While we recognize the urgency of addressing the devastation caused by these fires and extend our support in whatever other ways possible," they continue, "we implore you to recognize the urgent needs that remain in North Carolina."
With a $110 billion disaster relief package now approved, maintaining FEMA's presence is deemed essential by these representatives. They highlight its importance for deploying resources effectively and aiding recovery from what they describe as "the most devastating natural disaster we have ever experienced." Furthermore, they request prior notification if any decision is made to withdraw resources from North Carolina.
"Thank you for understanding the needs of our constituency and keeping all the current FEMA personnel in place," concludes their letter.
