Today, the House of Representatives passed the Laken Riley Act, also known as S. 5, with support from Congressman Rouzer (R-NC-07). The legislation aims to enhance community safety by mandating Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to detain illegal immigrants who commit serious crimes until they are deported. Crimes covered under this act include those resulting in serious bodily injury, theft, burglary, larceny, shoplifting, or assaulting a law enforcement officer. Additionally, the act empowers state governments to sue Executive Branch officials who do not enforce immigration laws.

Congressman Rouzer expressed his satisfaction with the passage of the bill: "What a difference an election makes. In the previous Congress, the U.S. Senate wouldn’t even allow debate on the House-passed Laken Riley Act. With Senate and House approval now achieved, it will go to the President for his signature to become law. This new law will make it easier for our law enforcement to take illegal criminal offenders, including murders such as the one who killed Laken Riley, off the streets and ensure their deportation."

The act is named after Laken Riley, who was tragically murdered almost a year ago while jogging on the University of Georgia campus by an illegal immigrant. Her assailant had been arrested twice before but was not detained by ICE due to existing border policies under the Biden-Harris Administration.
