The University of North Carolina at Wilmington (UNCW) has been awarded the 2026 Carnegie Elective Classification for Community Engagement. This national designation, presented by the American Council on Education and the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, recognizes higher education institutions that demonstrate a strong commitment to community engagement through teaching, research, and service. UNCW is among 277 institutions nationwide to receive this honor in the current cycle.
“This designation highlights the connections, knowledge and resources shared by UNCW and our community partners. Through these partnerships, we are able to provide invaluable hands-on learning opportunities for students and support the vital work happening locally, regionally and beyond,” said Chancellor Aswani Volety. “We are proud to serve the community and remain committed to enhancing local and regional access and engagement.”
At UNCW, community engagement includes approaches such as community-engaged pedagogy and service learning. These methods involve collaboration between students, faculty, and community members in reciprocal partnerships that integrate real-world experiences into academic programs. The aim is to promote an exchange of knowledge and resources between the university and its broader community.
Partnerships at UNCW take various forms including research collaborations, service-learning projects, and volunteer initiatives. Faculty, staff, students, organizations, and other institutions work together with a focus on building sustainable relationships that foster social responsibility and encourage positive change both locally and beyond.
UNCW has previously received recognition from the Carnegie Foundation as a Community Engagement Classified Institution in 2008 and 2015. Additional distinctions include being named for High Research Spending and Doctorate Production in 2018 by Carnegie as well as receiving the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities’ Innovation and Economic Prosperity University designation in 2022.
Established in 1947 as Wilmington College with just 238 students to meet postwar educational needs in southeastern North Carolina, UNCW now serves more than 19,800 students. Over nearly eight decades it has adapted its mission to address changing community needs while maintaining a focus on partnership-driven impact throughout southeastern North Carolina.
