The University of North Carolina at Wilmington (UNCW) has begun the new year by welcoming students, faculty, and staff back to campus following the winter break. Chancellor Aswani K. Volety shared a message to the Seahawk community, reflecting on recent achievements and outlining upcoming events and initiatives for 2026.

Volety noted the university’s celebration of commencement with the Class of 2025 and encouraged community members to view photos, stories, and a recap video on the commencement website. He highlighted UNCW’s ongoing commitment to providing opportunities for students to learn and prepare for their future careers.

The latest edition of UNCW Magazine was promoted as a resource for information about nationally recognized programs, notable alumni, and partnerships within the community. Volety stated that these features emphasize UNCW’s identity as “North Carolina’s coastal university.”

A significant milestone announced in the message is UNCW’s receipt of the 2026 Carnegie Elective Classification for Community Engagement. According to Volety, “This outstanding national recognition highlights the long-standing connections the university shares with partners across the region. These collaborations enhance our mission, inspiring innovation, creativity and new learning opportunities.”

Volety also referenced UNCW’s arts and athletics programming as key elements in fostering community engagement. He pointed out a range of arts events scheduled this semester—including plays, ballets, exhibitions, concerts, and recitals—and provided information about athletic competitions at Trask Coliseum.

Looking ahead to 2026, Volety addressed challenges facing higher education but expressed confidence in UNCW’s academic programs, growing enrollment numbers, and financial stability. He said that these factors would help guide the institution through any difficulties while keeping its mission central.

Homecoming festivities are planned for February 9-15 with a weeklong schedule including brunches, late night breakfast sessions, basketball games, fun runs, TEALgate events, and more opportunities for alumni and students to connect.

Campus safety was another focus of Volety’s message. He acknowledged efforts by the UNCW Police Department in maintaining security on campus through various resources such as safety apps (SafeZone), active attacker preparedness training sessions, self-defense programs, bicycle registration services, Operation ID initiatives—alongside direct contact options via phone or email in case assistance is needed.

Support services remain available as well: “Students may access support through the Counseling Center or through case management via the Office of the Dean of Students. Faculty and staff can find support through the Employee Assistance Program (EAP) available to them.”

Concluding his message with an invitation for informal interactions on campus or via social media platforms like Facebook and Instagram—or by reaching out directly via email—Volety thanked everyone for being part of what he described as a vibrant Seahawk community: “Let’s make this semester safe, successful and full of great experiences.”
