Families in New Hanover County are being encouraged to explore the eligibility requirements for the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC). This program offers supplemental nutritious foods, nutrition education, breastfeeding support, and referrals to healthcare and other community resources.
The WIC Program is managed locally by New Hanover County Health and Human Services located at 1650 Greenfield Street in Wilmington. Staff members are available during regular business hours from Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., to assist with inquiries and the application process.
Eligibility for the program requires individuals to meet specific criteria: they must be either pregnant women, breastfeeding women who have had a baby in the last 12 months, women who have had a baby in the last six months, infants, or children up to their fifth birthday. Additionally, applicants must reside in North Carolina and meet income eligibility requirements. The gross annual household income should not exceed 185 percent of the Federal poverty income guidelines. Recipients of Medicaid, Food and Nutrition Services (food stamps), and Work First automatically meet these criteria. An identified nutritional risk as determined by a health professional is also necessary.
“This institution is an equal opportunity provider.”
