City of Wilmington issued the following announcement on Oct. 21.
Wilmington Mayor Bill Saffo and City Attorney John Joye traveled to Cleveland, Ohio last week to take part in ongoing discussions related to a lawsuit the city filed in 2017 against parties that have caused or contributed to the opioid crisis in the local community.
The city joins more than 2,500 state and local governments, including New Hanover County, pursuing legal action. Saffo and Joye were invited, along with New Hanover County Commissioner Woody White and representatives from several other communities, to take part in the discussions. According to news reports, two of the Track 1 bellweather cases included in those state and local governments have reached a settlement, but the City of Wilmington’s case is not included. The city’s case is currently on hold as talks continue for a nationwide settlement.
Saffo said, “The opioid epidemic has already had a tremendous impact on our city, both in terms of lives lost and the time and resources spent to combat this epidemic. The city continues to actively assist in these nationwide talks about this hugely important issue.”
