New Hanover County issued the following announcement on Feb. 26.

NC State Extension Employee Breyana Davis, a certified Health Education Specialist working with communities in outreach and nutrition education, was awarded the Jane Steigerwald Community Advocate Award at the Feast Down East Local Food Conference hosted at UNCW on February 14.

In response to receiving the award Davis stated: “I am honored and humbled to receive the Jane Steigerwald Community Advocate Award. I look forward to growing in my career with the Extension and supporting efforts to improve healthy food access in New Hanover and Pender Counties.”

“Breyana has the innate and rare ability to teach to a variety of learning styles, ages, illnesses & ailments through her role as a SNAP-Ed Steps and Health Nutrition Educator for Pender and New Hanover Counties for NC State Extension,” said New Hanover County Arboretum and Cooperative Extension Director Lloyd Singleton. “She is an innovative educator who challenges others to think critically about how nutrition can be improved and implemented upon, and is continuously moving the pulse on how health is approached in our community. She looks at it from not just our food, but our individual health needs: where we live, what water we drink, the importance of movement for both the health of our bodies but also our minds.”

Davis was also instrumental in working with the Wilmington Farmers Market at Tidal Creek (which operate year round on Saturdays), to not only accept SNAP/EBT, otherwise known as food stamps, but also match every dollar spent with food stamps through the RAFI Fresh Bucks program.

The award is named after Jane Steigerwald, who was a dietician by trade, serving as the Director of Child Nutrition in New York before moving to Wilmington and becoming involved with the early days of Feast Down East. She was instrumental in the design and operation of the early days of the Food Hub, cultivating local nutrition and farm-to-school programs locally and implementing the Food Corps in North Carolina.
