New Hanover County issued the following announcement on July 22.

Total documented cases of COVID-19 in New Hanover County since the start of the pandemic surpassed 20,000 this week, along with a continued rise in new cases over the past month and increasing concern about the spread of the Delta variant.

“A month ago, our trend in new cases averaged 28 reported cases a week, but we saw 102 new reported cases just last week,” said Assistant Public Health Director Carla Turner, RN. “While we are still unsure the degree of severity that the Delta variant is having in our community, it’s clear that COVID-19 is still very much here and very much a threat. It has never been easier to get a vaccine, so please seek one out to protect yourself. Vaccines are an easy and effective way to reduce the spread of COVID-19 and severe illness in our community.”

COVID-19 Data in New Hanover County:

As of July 22, there have been 20,020 total cases of COVID-19 in New Hanover County, including 119 new cases over the last week.

Of the total number of cases, 19,610 have recovered and 233 cases are presumed to still be active. Sadly, 177 people have died from the virus.

In New Hanover County, approximately 121,869 residents (about 52 percent) have received one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, and approximately 116,208 residents (about 50 percent) are fully vaccinated and protected from COVID-19.
