City of Wilmington issued the following announcement on Feb. 14.
The North Front Street Streetscape Improvement project, initially slated to begin last month, will get underway immediately after the 2022 NC Azalea Festival.
Due to supply chain issues, portions of the new water and sewer pipes could not be obtained prior to June. The City of Wilmington, CFPUA, and the contractor, TA Loving Company, agreed to revise some of the material requirements of the underground utility piping. These revisions will enable the pipes to be on-hand by late March, coinciding with the expected delivery of other project materials. The changes meet all the necessary regulations for water and sewer pipes.
Although there is a change in start dates, the overall project duration is the same, with a completion date now set for the beginning of September.
The City is working with the contractor on the work sequence for the two blocks between Chestnut and Walnut streets. Work will begin by closing one block and up to one intersection to vehicle traffic for the underground work. During this first phase of utility and street work, pedestrian sidewalks and access to all businesses will remain open. Once the first block is complete, crews will re-open that block to vehicles (with a temporary surface) and then transition into next block. When both blocks are ready, a final coat of pavement and striping will be applied to the streets.
Upon completion, the 200-300 blocks of North Front Street will resemble the other streetscaping projects in downtown, especially Front Street between Market Street and Chestnut Street, which was completed in 2010 in a similar partnership with CFPUA.
This $3.5 million project is among the voter-approved Transportation Bond Projects and is jointly funded with the Cape Fear Public Utility Authority.
