New Hanover County residents ages 50 and older and certain immunocompromised individuals are now eligible to receive a second COVID-19 booster shot following recent approval from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services (NCDHHS). Both Pfizer (Comirnaty) and Moderna booster doses are available.
Individuals interested in receiving a second booster dose will have to meet certain age or health-related criteria and must have received their first booster dose at least four months prior to receiving a second booster. Booster doses will be available at the Pandemic Operations Center (1507 Greenfield Street).
“Whether you are getting your second booster or thinking about getting your initial COVID-19 vaccine, we strongly encourage everyone in New Hanover County to visit us at the Pandemic Operations Center to get vaccinated as we continue the fight against this virus,” said Pandemic Operations Manager Jon Campbell. “We are ready to make this a seamless process and answer any questions individuals may have about COVID and these life-saving vaccines.”
Eligible individuals may choose which vaccine they receive as a booster dose based on the following guidance:
- A second booster dose of the Pfizer or Moderna vaccine may be administered to individuals 50 years of age and older at least 4 months after getting an initial booster.
- A second booster dose of the Pfizer vaccine may be administered to individuals 12 years or older with certain kinds of immunocompromise at least 4 months after their initial booster. These are people who have undergone solid organ transplantation, or who are living with conditions that are considered to have an equivalent level of immunocompromise.
- A second booster dose of the Moderna vaccine may be administered to individuals 18 years of age and older with the same certain kinds of immunocompromise at least 4 months after the initial booster dose.
Appointments for COVID-19 boosters, as well as pediatric and adult vaccines, are encouraged and can be scheduled by visiting TakeMyShot.NC.gov, however walk-ups are accepted based on availability.
