New Hanover County is inviting qualified for-profit and non-profit developers and agencies to submit proposals for funding to assist with programs and projects that would ensure comprehensive opportunities for workforce and affordable housing in New Hanover County. The Planning & Land Use Department has developed eligibility criteria and priorities for the county’s new Workforce Housing Services Program, utilizing $3 million allocated by the Board of Commissioners for affordable housing in this fiscal year’s budget. The framework for the program was developed based on the findings of the Joint County/City Comprehensive Housing Study and survey to create an immediate impact to New Hanover County residents.
“With this Workforce Housing Services Program, we can be intentional with the county’s funding and really evaluate the needs of the community. The county will be able to fund the projects and programs that can have a meaningful impact now for our residents and also adapt the program and investments as market conditions change,” said Senior Long Range Planner Rachel LaCoe. “This is an important commitment by the Board of Commissioners, and the county will be working to leverage this local funding with that of the private sector to create even more affordable housing opportunities over the coming years.”
The initial framework has been designed to address the community’s housing needs by increasing the supply of residential units, retaining existing affordable housing stock, and increasing residents’ access to those homes. This is the first year in a five-year commitment by the Board of Commissioners to invest $15 million ($3 million per year over five years) toward affordable housing.
The RFP is open now through 5 p.m. on August 8, and funding recommendations are expected to be presented to the Board of Commissioners for approval in October 2022.
