Brunswick County Public Utilities is rescinding its Stage 1 Water Conservation Alert effective Monday, Aug. 22, 2022. This notice affects all customers of public water systems anywhere in Brunswick County.
The conservation alert was originally issued June 16, 2022. Recent rainfalls and the public’s efforts to conserve water have contributed to a drop to sustainable levels for the County’s water system.
However, if drier weather conditions return, additional alerts could be issued. Public Utilities continues to monitor its system levels and will notify residents in the event another water conservation alert is necessary.
Customers are highly encouraged to continue to use water wisely and maintain the recommended water irrigation schedule as follows:
- Odd address numbers: Tuesday/Thursday/Saturday
- Even address numbers: Wednesday/Friday/Sunday
- No irrigation on Mondays

Construction on Brunswick County’s main Northwest Water Treatment Plant to expand capacity to support ongoing growth and install a reverse osmosis treatment system is around 51% complete as of August 2022. The project will expand the conventional treatment facility from 24 million gallons per day (MGD) to 45 MGD and will provide a low-pressure reverse osmosis treatment capacity of no less than 36 MGD. The conservation alert was due to customer demands approaching the permitted treatment capacity of the county’s water system. Improvements to the raw water system were completed this spring that eliminated Cape Fear River raw water capacity limitations to Brunswick County.
Brunswick County recently finished constructing the Shallotte 24-inch water transmission water main, which provides additional capacity and redundancy for water access to the southern side of the county. This water main will help the County to avoid potential shutdowns in the event of planned or unplanned water outages or potential conservation needs in the future.
