Following a rigorous review by the North Carolina Local Health Department Accreditation Board, New Hanover County Health and Human Services’ Public Health Department has been awarded Reaccreditation Designation status through 2026.
“Accreditation gives our team the tools to guarantee we are providing the highest level of service within our facility and in the community,” said Health Promotion Supervisor and Accreditation Coordinator Diana Hills. “This process also helps identify ways the department can further improve our delivery of services, programs and policies to better meet the needs of our community. Achieving reaccreditation is a great accomplishment, and it reinforces the important work we are doing in the community and helps to improve our services to New Hanover County.”
Done every four years, the accreditation process offers local health departments a thorough review and plans established by North Carolina law to ensure the administration of quality services and programs. Accreditation was designed to cultivate continual improvements and ensure health departments remain a credible place for residents to seek services and programs.
New Hanover County was one of 12 local health departments throughout the state to be reaccredited this year, and Public Health Director David Howard was present at a November meeting of the North Carolina Local Health Department Accreditation Board to accept the achievement on behalf of the department.
“This is a testament to the commitment and hard work of our public health staff, while responding to the demands of the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Howard. “Our accreditation team has guided and supported the health department through this process to maintain our reaccreditation designation, and it is a significant honor as we continue striving to provide residents with the best public health services possible.”
The accreditation board was created by the state Division of Public Health and the North Carolina Association of Local Health Directors to develop a standardized system across the state, based on the essential public health services and the three core functions of assessment, assurance, and policy development.
