Suspect charged with First Degree Murder in Shooting on Johnston Road near Cummins

On Tuesday February 7, 2023 at approximately 4:30pm, units of the Nash County Sheriff’s Office responded to the intersection of Johnston Road and US 301 just outside of the entrance to Cummins Engine Plant in reference to a shooting.  Upon arrival, it was determined that one person (MCNAIR) was dead at the scene, and a second person (HATCH) was now on scene at the L&L Convenience store in Battleboro.  The second subject was also suffering from gunshot wounds as well.  Hatch was transported to a local hospital for treatment, where he has been recovering since the incident.

Based on the investigation of the incident, it was determined that McNair and Hatch had previous arguments with each other over social media for unknown reasons.  Hatch was stationary outside near the entrance of Cummins waiting for McNair to get off work on the day of the shooting.  As McNair left work, Hatch blocked his vehicle in the roadway, and began shooting at McNair.  McNair was able to return fire and struck Hatch also.  After Hatch received medical care for his wounds, he was released from the hospital on today’s date and taken into custody by Nash County Detectives.  He was charged with First Degree Murder in the death of McNair, and placed into the Nash County Detention Center under no bond.  His first court appearance will be 02-23-2023.

SUSPECT/OFFENDER:

NIKITA RAJHON HATCH 34 YO

Rocky Mount NC

VICTIM:  QUENTIN EARL MCNAIR 27 YO
