A divide in the two parties of North Carolina has another upset as NC House Democrats walk out during vote for pro-Israel resolution.
According to Carolina Journal political writer Alex Baltzegar, a group of NC House Democrats walked out of the vote for a resolution to support Israel after Hamas terrorist attacks killed hundreds of Jews over the weekend. Reps. Amber Baker and Nasif Majeed waited outside the chamber during the vote. The resolution passed 104-0.
This comes at a time when North Carolina is already facing challenges due to the war in Israel. The Times of Israel reported that this has been the deadliest time for Jews since the Holocaust, and citizens of Israel have been brutally attacked by the Hamas organization. In response, Sen. Thom Tillis of NC stated, "Hamas is pure evil."
The motion to approve support for Israel was agreed upon by North Carolina GOP lawmakers, who overrode five Democratic vetoes on Tuesday. The statement included that it is part of their duty to help the citizens of Israel and stand by them during these times. Tim Moore, the House Speaker, declared that they would stand with Israel no matter what they need.
However, the walkout by the NC House Democrats raises questions about whether the Democratic Party in North Carolina supports Israel. The bipartisan resolution introduced in the House aimed to condemn Hamas for the terrorist attacks and show support for Israel. Instead of voting 'yes' or 'no' to the resolution, 12 Democrats walked out, leaving many wondering about their stance on the issue. The resolution ultimately passed 104-0, with all Democrats abstaining from voting.
The walkout by the NC House Democrats highlights the deep divide within the state's political parties when it comes to supporting Israel during this challenging time.
