City Offices To Close Jan. 15 for MLK Day

All offices for the City of Wilmington will be closed on Monday, Jan. 15 in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. 

City Recycling & Trash collection services will NOT CHANGE scheduled collection days for the MLK holiday. Please have carts out before 6 a.m. on your regular service day. Any appointment services such as bulky, metal, or electronics pick-up for MLK Day or Tuesday, January 16th customers, must be scheduled before 4pm on Friday, January 12th. Call us at 910.341.7875 with any questions or appointment needs.

MLK Day Parade

The Martin Luther King Jr. Day Parade is expected to take place on Monday, Jan. 15 at 11 a.m. and will have some impact on traffic in downtown Wilmington.

Third Street will be closed to traffic between Harnett and Market streets beginning at 7 a.m.

The parade route (see map below) has been updated this year. It will begin at Third Street near Hanover Street and head south, turning on Princess Street and ending on Fourth Street near Chestnut Street.

A number of intersections along the parade route will be blocked or closed, beginning at 7 a.m. and lasting until approximately 2:30 p.m.

The following detours will be in place:

  • Northbound Third Street through traffic to be detoured to Fifth Avenue
  • Southbound Third Street through traffic to be detoured to Front Street or Davis Street to Fourth Street or Fifth Avenue
Note that Front Street will be open to north and southbound traffic. Market street will remain open to east and westbound traffic.
