The Wilmington Fire Department has officially opened applications for the 2025 Recruit Academy, marking the beginning of the recruitment period that will run until April 18, 2024. Fire Chief Steve Mason expressed his enthusiasm for the upcoming academy, stating, “As a fire chief, the recruit academy is an exciting opportunity for me to see the future of our organization begin their careers.” He emphasized the importance of new recruits in bringing fresh talents, perspectives, and experiences to strengthen the department.

Chief Mason highlighted the honor and privilege of wearing the WFD uniform, stating, “Becoming a member of the WFD family is not easy. Those who have what it takes to earn it, will be rewarded with the best job in the world.” The department offers a range of benefits for its firefighters, including job security, insurance, retirement plans, paid leave, and tuition reimbursement.

Firefighter Dani Tridico emphasized the evolving perception of firefighting as an opportunity for individuals from diverse backgrounds. Tridico remarked, “It's important for us to have all types of people on the line, and it’s important for you to view it as an opportunity. If you want to help people, this is a great way to do it.”

Candidates interested in joining the Wilmington Fire Department as Firefighter/EMTs for the 2025 Recruit Academy can apply online through the department’s website. While firefighting experience is not mandatory, applicants must demonstrate qualities such as a strong work ethic, responsibility, determination, and teamwork. Successful applicants will undergo a six-month academy where they will receive necessary training and will be paid during this period. Upon completion, recruits will transition to 24-hour rotating shifts.

The academy is scheduled to commence in August 2024. For further details on benefits and the application process, individuals are encouraged to visit www.wilmingtonnc.gov/fire.
