Senator Ted Budd (R-NC) led a press conference today, urging Senate Democrats to pass the Laken Riley Act. "We simply do not believe that another American family needs to experience a tragedy like the one that befell the Riley family. That’s why we need to pass the Laken Riley Act today," Senator Budd emphasized. He also announced his intention to propose the act as an amendment to the upcoming spending package.

Senator Budd stressed the importance of a fair vote on the Laken Riley Act, stating, "This amendment deserves a fair, up-or-down vote on the Senate floor. The American people need to know who stands on the side of preventing tragedies, and who will sadly continue to enable them."

The Laken Riley Act, introduced by Senator Budd and Senator Katie Britt (R-AL), aims to address crimes committed by illegal aliens. It would require Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to arrest illegal aliens who commit specified offenses and ensure their detention until they are removed from the United States. Additionally, the bill empowers states attorneys general to take legal action against the Secretary of Homeland Security for immigration-related actions that harm their states or citizens.

The legislation is named after Laken Riley, a University of Georgia nursing student who was tragically murdered by an illegal alien on campus. The assailant had a history of theft and shoplifting but was released prior to the incident.

The House of Representatives recently passed the Laken Riley Act in a bipartisan vote, demonstrating significant support for the bill.
