Washington, D.C. — Senator Ted Budd (R-NC) delivered a compelling speech on the Senate floor today, urging the chamber to pass his bill aimed at reviewing Qatar’s Major Non-NATO Ally Status. The proposed legislation, known as the ‘Reviewing Qatar’s Major Non- NATO Ally Status Act,’ was introduced by Senator Budd recently.
During his address, Senator Budd emphasized the importance of holding major allies to account, stating, “Seeking the release of the hostages demands strength and moral clarity. We demand it of our own leaders, and we should require it from our major allies.” He highlighted Qatar's hosting of Hamas leaders and the need for action to secure the release of hostages held by the group.
Senator Budd pointed out Qatar's leverage over Hamas, noting their ability to influence the situation. He expressed frustration at the lack of progress in hostage negotiations, stating, “The truth is that Hamas is not interested in releasing the hostages, and Qatar seems equally uninterested in forcing them to do so. It is time that we hold nations like Qatar accountable for their dithering and their stalling.”
Acknowledging the gravity of the situation, Senator Budd emphasized the need for concrete actions, declaring, “The time for talking is over, and the time for action is now. If we don’t see action, then Qatar must face consequences.” He underscored that the bill he introduced is a crucial step towards ensuring the freedom of American hostages.
Despite facing obstacles in the Senate, Senator Budd remained resolute in his commitment to bringing hostages home safely. He affirmed, “I would do everything in my power to make it happen,” highlighting the importance of honesty and directness in diplomatic relations. He called for the bill to be utilized as a tool to advance hostage negotiations and secure the release of all individuals held in Gaza.
Senator Ted Budd's impassioned plea for action on Qatar's Major Non-NATO Ally Status underscores the pressing need to address the hostage situation and hold nations accountable for their roles in facilitating resolutions.
