The Wilmington City Council is set to convene for a regular meeting on Tuesday, April 16, with a lineup of important topics on the agenda. Among these are various proclamations and agreements that hold significance for the community.
The meeting will include the recognition of Honor Flight of the Cape Fear Area, along with proclamations naming April 2024 as Fair Housing Month, April 18 as National Line Worker Appreciation Day, and April 26 as Arbor Day.
One of the key items to be discussed is an agreement and funding ordinance for a $600,000 grant from the NC Department of Public Safety to support the Opioid Overdose Intervention Program and Quick Response Team.
Additionally, the Council will address a resolution concerning the condemnation actions required for the acquisition of easements and right-of-way on the Wrightsville Avenue sidewalk and roundabout project. Progress has been made in voluntary acquisitions, but negotiations are ongoing for specific terms of the agreements.
Another significant agenda item is the award of a $2.467 million construction contract for the Fifth Avenue Street and Sidewalk Improvements project. This project aims to address the deteriorated street conditions and outdated utility infrastructure in the city.
Furthermore, an agreement is on the table to provide $2.1 million in gap financing for the construction of 32 units of affordable supportive housing by Good Shepherd Ministries. This project, aimed at serving extremely low-income individuals, is part of the city's efforts to address housing needs in the community.
The Council will also consider a resolution in support of the NCDOT’s application for a grant to replace the Cape Fear Memorial Bridge.
Residents interested in following the meeting can do so remotely through various platforms provided by the city, ensuring transparency and accessibility for all involved.
