Senator Ted Budd and Representative Pat Harrigan have formally requested that the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) extend the Transitional Sheltering Assistance Program for residents affected by Hurricane Helene in Western North Carolina. This request was made through a letter addressed to FEMA Administrator Deanna Criswell.
Currently, FEMA has approved a 24-hour extension on hotel vouchers set to expire on January 11th. However, Budd and Harrigan argue that this short extension may not suffice for those with uninhabitable homes as they face severe weather conditions.
The letter emphasizes, “FEMA’s decision to extend the program by 24 hours may not provide adequate time for individuals with uninhabitable homes to find shelter to safely ride out the severe weather.”
Concerns have been raised due to forecasts predicting up to 8 inches of snow in parts of western North Carolina. The lawmakers urge FEMA to reevaluate the situation and consider further extensions to ensure safe shelter for affected families during this period.
They stress that "the well-being and safety of those affected must remain a top priority" and express readiness to support FEMA's efforts in managing the ongoing situation. They conclude by thanking FEMA for its continued support of disaster survivors in the region.
